Great song and great video. It’s fantastic that Paul McCartney made a song about the truce.

There is a very good book called “Silent Night by Stanley Weintraub about the Christmas Eve truce.

To dylanreilly96, I get where your coming from, but dont think that one extra person is going to make a difference in this undesirable war.
Please think about your family and friends before you sign up to the army because its them who are going to suffer. I wish you all the best in whatever you choose.
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. :)

The thing is mate, people can’t get along anymore, so forever and ever people will just keeping shooting the hell out of, or bombing the hell out of each other so it’s something we need to accept and live up to. So that’s why I’m gonna join the army, one extra person to help:)

It’s actually about the 1914 Christmas truce between British & German troops during World War l.

  16. beepit95on 26 Dec 2009 at 2:06 am

At first I thought this song was about smoking pot, but it’s actually a quite a bit more meaningfull then that. Great song, heart warming video.

Wow. This is a really beautiful song. I’m such a history nerd, so I already loved this video from the very beginning.

Plus that smile at 2:16 is so heartwarming. :)

In many sectors the truce continued until New Years Day. Both British & German Commanders vowed that no such truce would be allowed again. In the following years of the war, artillery bombardments were ordered on Christmas Eve to ensure that there were no further lulls in combat.

I always show this to my Year 8s when reading ‘Private Peaceful’. They love it!

  24. Beatlesfan2087on 26 Dec 2009 at 2:06 am

I feel like Paul really channeled John Lennon in this song when writing the lyrics.
