He also demonstrates the kind of abuse of power that that would recquire, and why it will ultimately fail.

“If scientology is atheism, why do they call it a church?”

heh, Calling themselves a “church” gets them tax exemptions and allows them to legitimize ripping off dumb, gullible people for all they’re worth. Scientology is a legalized scam, and one of the most successful one out there.

Morality doesn’t require religion in order to exist. Everybody has morals whether they are religious or not. Second, atheism isn’t an organized group or religion or whatever. So yeah, there are no set doctrines or written code of conduct that every atheist must follow. But individual atheists do have morals, waffles.

    L. Ron Hubbard’s original idea was to market “Dianetics” as a medical science, where anyone who joined his organization could be Christian/Atheist etc. It failed miserably under scrutiny of criticism from the mental health field. As a result, Hubbard re-packaged his failed pseudo-science as a religion to protect it from criticism. He assumed the stance that man is a spiritual being. There are statements from Scientology member(s) saying that Scientology promotes a belief in God or “something”…

if religion was illegal so would having morals. Society and civilization at one point needs a religion or ideal to become a society. Since aiethism has no ideals or morals you cant just simply say ban the ideology of living a good life.

    Atheists have guns, too!

But I fail to worry, for they are such innocent, inanimate things.

I agree banning things or ideas never really works. It just toughens the opposition and legitimizes the claim.

Well I think schools can require children to wear appropriate clothing – girls walking around in tents would hinder proper education (PE?).

Holocaust denial – good. My point would that the Nazis were condemned as criminals and the propagation of nazism is in effect inciting people to crime. But you can believe whatever you want (like that killing people is ok). But walking about telling people killing Jews or Gypsies or whatever is ok – that incitement to violence.

I don’t find the idea of banning religion to be so out there. I mean, it’s happened before. Joseph Stalin did it. Now, granted, Joseph Stalin was a rare breed of psychopath, but he does demonstrate that it can happen.

“If scientology is atheism, why do they call it a church?”

Scientology is technically a religion and to be religious you don’t necessarily have to be thiestic. A church is a place of religion, therefore scientology has its own church.

    Into what?

  11. Akatam0t0maon 01 Mar 2010 at 9:20 am

You articulate it better than I ever could, Coughlan! Good job!

  12. Akatam0t0maon 01 Mar 2010 at 9:20 am

“The Christians all have guns, every single one of them. ”

Even if they didn’t have guns, making religion illegal would be a bad idea. Communists tried that in the Soviet Union.
And besides, you claim that “every single of them” has guns is a very broad-brush statement that is factually incorrect.

  13. raz357on 01 Mar 2010 at 9:20 am

Can’t do it in the U.S….

The Christians all have guns, every single one of them.

nicely said Rich. Banning is a bad thing altogether. When people agree to ban religion or ban burkhas, you’re also allowing censorship and banning of everything such as certain films, tv programs and music. Appalling

  18. wilfredtheboldon 01 Mar 2010 at 9:20 am

If scientology is atheism, why do they call it a church?

    Otherwise, good points, coughlan.

  19. Millrideron 01 Mar 2010 at 9:20 am

I see what you are saying. People will be people… Banning stuff is what religions do best, we should not emulate such bad behavior.

  20. Cr0uch1ng71g3ron 01 Mar 2010 at 9:20 am

“there are communists and fascists out there” Oh boy..

  21. Deadleader555on 01 Mar 2010 at 9:20 am

I agree with you on the burka issue… i’m completaly against forcing it on wyman, but also against banning it… I think there are more valid ways to get rid of this shit blanket, in other to preserve freedom.. And ofcourse i’m against making religion ilegal (what a stupid bullshit).. But it is a matter of fact that religion is becoming dead, specialy christianity.. When it comes to Islam, i guess we have to wait a bit more ;)

Coughlan, irrelevant, but what is your stance on drugs?

Ha. Sorry. I’m Polish. My diction is a bit screwy sometimes. I sound like Yoda, I know haha.
    ‘Thoroughly, enjoyed this have I’.

  25. notabookon 01 Mar 2010 at 9:20 am

I disagree that it should be kept private. As long as they are not using their religion to deny people rights, like many religious groups are doing now with homosexual rights, then I don’t see a problem with them having it in the public life. Keep it seperated from govement, move on, etc.
