Ahh, Zwingli, not Calvin? I remember that Edward VI, when he died, had gone very much to the extremes of Protestantism, which Mary reversed, leaving Elizabeth to go back to a more liberal Protestantism than Edward had gone for, which also kept some elements of Catholicism.

In all honesty, religious history doesn’t interest me that much, but I did do a project on it last year, so I have a very vague knowledge. Kudos, though, for giving an intelligent response and not simply resorting to abuse.

Strictly speaking Edward was raised with Catholic values at the core of his teaching, just seperate from Rome. His first protector, Somerset, favoured a more traditional doctrine that sucked up to the Holy Roman Empire without reasserting papal authority. His second protector, Northumberland, pushed and politicked and very nearly converted England to a more Lutheran/Zwinglian doctrine that was more extreme than anything before or since excepting Cromwell and the Puritans…

But Edward Vi (is that the right one?) introduced a faith along the lines of Calvinism popular in Geneva. Mary got rid of that, going back to Catholicism, and then Elizabeth went back to a halfway between Catholicism and Calvinist religion.

Henry didn’t set up the Church of England exactly, you’re right. But he definitely did set us along the way, and began the break with Catholicism

  16. britishhedgehogon 26 Dec 2009 at 9:18 am

He’s wrong though. Henry VIII set up a church in england that was still catholic but without papal supremacy.

Elizabeth created an informal anglican faith with it only becoming that towards the end of her reign
